Enriching lives, connecting communities

The Queen of the Isle of Wight and other Stories

The Isle of Wight Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty has received an earmarked grant of just over £1.5 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund through its Landscape Partnership programme: the ‘Down to the Coast – East Wight Landscape’. The New Carnival Company is proud to be part of this partnership and will be delivering over the next five years a strand of this programme called ‘The Queen of the Isle of Wight and Other Stories’. We will be working with local people to create large scale outdoor performances and celebratory events inspired by their local heritage and landscape.

The Newchurch Lantern Trail through Martins Wood (in association with HIWWT) is a recent example of our work here. The Trail was inspired by William Shakespeare’s play As You Like It, which is fictitiously set in the Forest of Arden. The Trail formed part of NCCs 2016 programme of events to mark the 400 Anniversary of Shakespeare’s passing.
