Enriching lives, connecting communities

This is OUR carnival!

Launching the Isle of Wight’s National Children’s Carnival Week programme

The New Carnival Company (NCC) yesterday joined other professional carnival organisations all over the country in the simultaneous UK-wide Launch Event for this summer’s National Children’s Carnival Week.

The company’s ‘live’ outdoor event took place on Thursday at Brading Roman Villa, with a restricted invited audience, all socially distanced due to Covid – 19. Guests were treated to a colourful and energetic programme of carnival dance, costumes, songs and celebration.

The new IW High Sheriff, James Attrill, was among those invited to the launch and gave his full support to the initiative, he said – ‘I am so impressed with your project – just what we need to move out of the gloom and back to normal life’. Students from the Performing Arts department of Isle of Wight College and the islands’ Theatre in Education (TEd) team performed to a new commissioned carnival song (anthem) called ‘This is our Carnival’, which has been produced in collaboration with the IW Music Hub.

Frankie Goldspink, Creative Director of the New Carnival Company, hosted the show and explained how important the new carnival scheme is to children, their teachers and parents all over the country ‘after such a phenomenally difficult and challenging year it is more important than ever for children and young people to join together, get creative and express themselves. Carnival is the perfect tool for nurturing the green shoots of recovery and schools are the perfect conduit to enable this to take place’.

The New Carnival Company has adopted a special theme ‘Colours of the Rainbow’ for this year’s project, and is offering all schools and community family groups free online workshops, plus supported packages where artists can securely visit schools to help out for a small charge. It is planned that all groups will facilitate their own pop-up carnival events and celebrations in the safety of their own venues and with their own invited audiences during the week of 12-18 July. At the moment 15 Island Schools and 3 community groups have signed up for the programme and plenty more are welcome!
