Shakespeare inspired Lantern Trail through Martin’s Wood, Newchurch

The Second Newchurch Lantern Trail around Martins Wood on Isle of Wight is being held for two nights this year as it was so popular in 2015. It will take place on Thursday 3 and Friday 4 November. This year the theme of the Lantern Trail is As You Like It, Shakespeare’s popular comedy, which is set in the Forest of Arden (aka Martins Wood!).

The event is part of our special programme of themed events for 2016, marking 400 years since the Bard’s passing. Local families and school children have been creating lanterns to carry along the trail, as well as special installations and illuminations in keeping with the theme of the play, these include a flock of sheep, a giant illuminated deer, love hearts in the trees and various creatures that live in the forest. William Shakespeare himself, our much loved giant puppet, created in house by NCC lead artist Gina Dyer, will be presiding over events.  Other attractions will be a choreographed performance by children from both Arreton and Newchurch Primary School Carnival Clubs, and a soliloquy from the melancholy Jacques ” the Seven Ages of Man’ performed by Josh Pointing from the IW Shakespeare Company.  The Newchurch Art Group has created some delightful interpretation boards to mark the route.

Newchurch Lantern Trail is supported by Heritage Lottery funds through the Down to the Coast project, led by IoW AONB. The aim of the project is ‘to encourage local people to take inspiration from the heritage of the landscape to create a series of outdoor celebratory performances‘. The event on both days is free of charge. The trail starts outside All Saints Parish Church in Newchurch at 6pm. Bring your own lantern or carry a torch!
