Enriching lives, connecting communities

BIOSPHERE ISLAND Parade Anthem launched

The New Carnival Company in association with the IoW Music Hub are proud to launch the official recording of the new Biosphere Island Mardi Gras Anthem. The song, recorded just over a week ago live at Oakfield Primary School, Ryde, features lyrics written by Jo Downs in response to this year’s theme – celebrating the Isle of Wight as a candidate for UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve status.

Over 80 x Year 4 pupils took part in the recording session over the course of the workshop day, which was led by IoW Music Hub coordinator Kath Page and technician Luke Targett. Live instruments were performed by Tim and Jo Downs.

The song will be sung by over 1000 children from 30 schools and community groups at the Ryde School site on Saturday 29 June as the parade forms up to leave at 3pm.  Spectators lining the streets will also hear it repeatedly played during the course of the parade.

Frankie Goldspink, Creative Director for The New Carnival Company and Mardi Gras coordinator said ‘this delightfully catchy song, with simple actions, captures the energy of the Mardi Gras and the Biosphere theme. We are very excited as the Announcement from UNESCO in Paris regarding our designation as a World Biosphere Reserve is expected just a few days before our parade, making this a really special day for everyone involved’.

The campaign for recognition of the Island as a Biosphere Reserve, celebrating its unique environmental, historical and cultural heritage, has been led by the IW Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, (AONB) who have sponsored the Mardi Gras parade.
