Launch of IW Mardi Gras 2019

The New Carnival Company (NCC) is delighted to announce that the next IW Mardi Gras will take place on June 29, 2019, and that’s not the only exciting news.
The official launch of Mardi Gras 2019 will take place from 6pm on Tuesday, October 30 at Quay Arts, Newport and will include some very special guests.
The UK Man and the Biosphere Committee will be attending, to represent UNESCO as part of the Isle of Wight’s bid to become a Biosphere Reserve.

Last years  Mardi Gras ‘Global Biospheres’ theme was inspired by the work of IW Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) to achieve UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status for the Island, and the 2019 local theme of Biosphere Island will continue this support.

Richard Grogan, AONB Lead Officer said, “The IW AONB Partnership is pleased and proud to be leading the nomination for making the IW England’s third UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. This recognition acknowledges the Island as an international example of how people and nature can thrive together sustainably, and it gives us hope for the future of ourselves, our children and future generations living in this beautiful place.”

New for Mardi Gras 2019, each school or group working under headings including Historic Environment, Food and Farming and Dark Skies will be partnered by a local organisation connected to the Biosphere bid. Partners are to include IW Zoo, the Archaeology Discovery Centre, Hampshire and IW Wildlife Trust, Dinosaur Isle and Briddlesford Farm, who will offer expertise and a field trip during the research process to provide information and help inspire costume ideas.

Frankie Goldspink, creative director of the NCC, said, “We are delighted to be working with such a large and diverse range of supporting partners for the 2019 theme. Focusing wholly on what’s unique and special about our Island, we are expecting more people than ever to come forward and join us in this colourful celebration.”

Schools and community groups are welcome to the launch, to discover more about the parade, how to get involved, what support is offered and why the IW is bidding to become an internationally recognised UNESCO biosphere reserve.
