Enriching lives, connecting communities

15-month NCC arts development programme for Ventnor Carnival announced!

Arts Council England has approved a grant to Ventnor Town Council for over £13,000. The project, developed with the New Carnival Company and Ventnor Carnival Association is for a 15- month programme of workshops, masterclasses and leader training – in the production of a theatrical carnival presentation based on the mythology of the Isle of Wight – ‘The legend of the Snaak Stang’. This will be presented in turn at Ventnor Carnival 2017, Christmas in Ventnor 2017 and Ventnor Carnival 2018.

The Mayor of Ventnor Jason Mack said – ‘This exciting community project will reach out to the town and develop the talent within our community. It will add an extra dimension to Ventnor Carnival and Christmas in Ventnor, bringing together professional artists and creatives with residents of all ages. I am pleased that Arts Council England has acknowledged the importance of our Carnival as a way of developing local creativity and shaping our community by supporting this project.’
Chris Slann, Executive Director of the New Carnival Company said – ‘We are delighted to be working with Ventnor Carnival Association and Town Council on this highly prestigious carnival arts development programme. We believe that developing a highly visual, theatrical carnival presentation over 15 months will embed sustainable skills within the community whilst building new audiences at Ventnor’s unique events programme”

The Snaak Stang project will allow us to offer training in a range of artistic skills to the community – including giant puppets, carnival costumes, dance and illuminated images. The programme will develop higher level skills whilst producing finished costumes for the town events

The main creative activities are:

• Masterclass carnival costume training weekends for local artists
• Giant Puppet making
• Family focused Summer Schools
• Lantern making
• Workshop Leader training
• Dance and Mass Movement

The finale performances at Ventnor Main and Illuminated Carnivals in 2018 will require the whole presentation to be tightly choreographed & include theatrical interventions.
