We are Unlimited!
The New Carnival Company’s disability carnival club VIVA CARNIVAL has received a prestigious International award from Unlimited to develop its work with disabled Island carnival practitioners and to build on existing links with its partner organisation Embaixadores da Alegria, Rio de Janeiro’s only disability-led samba school.
The project called simply Alegria (which means ‘Joy’ in Portuguese) will investigate some of the barriers which disabled people face taking part in carnival and will try to understand why there are so few professional disabled carnival artists in this country. Partners will share their experience to create new opportunities for professional training and to promote leadership skills for both new and existing disabled carnival artists.
Part of the R & D for the Alegria project will be a meeting of the three organisations in Rio, Brazil in the summer. Plans are afoot to create a collaborative processional work with Embaixadores which will tour to five venues across the country and to two international events next year. The New Carnival Company will be the producing partner for the whole programme.
The Award for the initial R & D phase is £18,000. The main (and additionally funded) programme will commence in November 2017, subject to successful R & D outcomes, and will run until autumn 2018.
Chris Slann, secretary for VIVA Carnival Club and also Director the New Carnival Company (NCC) said, “We are overjoyed at this announcement. NCC has been championing the case for disability carnival since London 2012 and has continued to lobby for greater investment to understand the problems, real and perceived, that prevent disabled carnival practitioners from entering the profession. This will be a great opportunity for all concerned and we are very grateful to Unlimited for enabling this valuable piece of work to finally happen.”
