All the World’s in the Woods

More than 400 people attended the Newchurch Lantern Trail through Martin’s Woods last Thursday and Friday. Themed on Shakespeare’s play As you Like It, set in the forest of Arden, the whole event was hosted by the Bard himself (NCC’s giant puppet) and of course the melancholy character Jacques who rounded off the evening with a live rendition of Shakespeare’s famous speech All the World’s a Stage.

It was a magical evening, as the New Carnival Company guided excited schoolchildren, their families and friends around a 45 minute circular walk by lantern light. It was very, very dark! Along the way were illuminated sculptures and  installations, all made by community volunteers, depicting the wildlife of the woods.  Heart shaped lamps bearing love poems hung in the trees to guide the way. Soundscapes, specially created for the evening, added to the whole experience and the atmosphere.

The Newchurch Lantern Trail is part of the Down to the Coast project, supported by the Heritage Lottery.

The project was deemed to be a resounding success and the New Carnival Company hopes to build on skills developed and a growing audience to plan some more surprises for next year.
