Shakespeare Mardi Gras launched!

launch event

The New Carnival Company officially unveiled the theme for its 2016 Mardi Gras parade at an evening event at The Learning Centre, Ryde, on Wednesday. ‘All the World’s A Stage’  – a Shakespeare Mardi Gras, will be held on Saturday 25 June and is to be part of a national programme of events, performances and exhibitions across the country highlighting the 4ooth Anniversary of the passing of William Shakespeare.

Over 50 people, representing 22 different schools and community groups from across the Island, attended the event. Frankie Goldspink, Mardi Gras curator for the NCC, presented the pictorial narrative for ‘All the World’ a Stage’ and invited schools and groups to adopt a play or famous saying from Shakespeare to inspire their costume designs and performance at the parade.

Frankie said “This is a great opportunity for the Island to celebrate the life and work of our national poet on such a significant anniversary. Shakespeare wrote 37 plays and 154 sonnets and his work is still performed today all over the world. The themes and morals of his plays are timeless and continue to be relevant to our modern lives. We want to present Shakespeare in an original and vibrant way to a great audience on June 25 and aim to have inspired young people and adults alike to rediscover his work along the way.”

Also present at the launch were Estelle Baker from the IW Heritage Education Service, who brought along some replica costumes and props from Carisbrooke Castle’s collection which relate to Shakespeare’s times and Kristianne Drake from Artswork based in Southampton who talked to schools about getting Arts Awards through their work on the project.

There will be a second opportunity to see the presentation and talk to NCC staff and artists at the Coaching House, The New Carnival Company’s headquarters in Ryde, on Thursday 28 January at 6pm. The closing date for Registrations to take part in Shakespeare Mardi Gras – All the World’s a Stage, is 4 March.
