On 16 October, The New Carnival Company will officially unveil the theme for IW Mardi Gras 2015, in association with the 2015 historic anniversaries programme at the Houses of Parliament – it’s to be called Magna Carta Masquerade!

As its most exciting Island parade since the Nat West Island Games opening in 2011, The New Carnival Company has secured support, resources and official branding to be part of a UK-wide celebrations programme called ‘Parliament in the Making’ to mark the 800th anniversary of the sealing of Magna Carta and the 750th anniversary of the Simon de Montfort Parliament.

Magna Carta Masquerade will present a spectacular street parade for June 27th next year, starring local schoolchildren and community performers, music, dance and colourful costumes celebrating the journey to freedom and democracy of the British people.

Frankie Goldspink, Participation and Learning Manager at The New Carnival Company said “We have had two inspiring meetings at Westminster with the 2015 anniversaries team to grow our ideas together. This is the only carnival project partnering with Parliament’s 2015 Anniversaries programme and we are expecting a lot of interest and visitors from all over the country, including Parliamentary Members themselves”.

The IW Mardi Gras takes a theme each year which complements the national curriculum and topical areas of learning. In 2014 it was Natural Geographic. In 2015 the Magna Carta theme will link to the History and Citizenship curricula using the celebrations around the ‘Parliament in the Making’ programme to give real value to the creative carnival process.

Caterina Loriggio, 2015 Anniversaries, Senior Parliamentary Campaign Manager said,       “We are delighted to be working with The New Carnival Company to create such an exciting 2015 project on the Isle of Wight. We hope that people all across the UK will take inspiration from the year’s events which will highlight hundreds of years of democratic developments and focus on the movements and moments which made a real difference in giving us the rights and representation that we enjoy today”

The Launch of Magna Carta Masquerade will take place at the Learning Centre, Westridge, Ryde on Thursday 16 October at 6pm. The event will be attended by senior representatives from Parliament and the leader of IW Council, Cllr. Ian Stephens. The event is open to all to come along and find out how they can get involved. New participating schools and groups will be especially welcomed and will get lots of help if it’s their first time!
