Wightlink to support Mardi Gras in Ryde

Thousands of Isle of Wight young people, family and friends will be enjoying the magic of carnival this summer, thanks to a £2,973 donation from Wightlink through the Isle of Wight Community Fund.

The New Carnival Company will use the money from Wightlink to support additional enhancements for the annual Mardi Gras which now includes a cultural music stage, carnival showcase and family fun event at Eastern Gardens throughout the day.

More than 25 schools and community groups are taking part in this year’s Isle of Wight Mardi Gras in Ryde on Saturday 28 June. The colourful theme for 2014 will be National Geographic – groups of young people will be challenged to research and create costumes capturing the essence of the polar ice cap, Amazon rain forest, Great Barrier Reef and other global features. The NCC is one of more than a hundred community groups and organisations supported by Wightlink.

Executive Director at the NCC Chris Slann says: “As a Community Interest Company, we appreciate the help we receive from organisations like Wightlink, their support is crucial for our survival.”

Wightlink Customer Relations Manager Daisy Dawes presented the cheque to Chris Slann and Frankie Goldspink from the NCC. She adds: “We are delighted to support the Mardi Gras and hope everyone has a fantastic time at the event on 28 June”.

NCC’s application to the IWCF for money was approved by an independent panel and confirmed by Wightlink to be paid from its fund held within the IWCF.

Fund Development Manager Ian Jenkins says: “These grants really make a difference to the Island groups who do such great work within the community. We are grateful to Wightlink for supporting this scheme.”
